Operation & SMV Intelligence: practical industry application
SMV intelligence builds a fair, reproducible time standard from an approved method and defined quality level. It is used for costing, capacity, target setting, balancing, incentive design, and improvement—not as a stopwatch number detached from method conditions.
Execution procedure
- Break the garment into discrete operations with start point, end point, handling, machine, attachment, seam specification, and quality requirement.
- Stabilize the method and workstation before study; observe trained operators and exclude abnormal delays from basic time.
- Rate observed performance consistently, calculate normal time, then apply approved personal, fatigue, and unavoidable-delay allowances.
- Validate the standard against pilot output and revise when construction, machine, attachment, bundle size, or method changes.
- Issue an operation bulletin with sequence, SMV, machine, manpower, target, quality point, and method reference.
Practical case
- A collar operation misses target although sewing speed is adequate. Motion review reveals repeated reorientation and searching for matched parts; improve bundle presentation and guide placement before raising speed.
- Restudy the approved method and update the bulletin only after sustained validation.
Operational limits must follow the approved buyer specification, product risk assessment, legal requirements, and calibrated test method. The approved tech pack takes precedence over general guidance.
